What is Reflux?

It has many names: GERD, Dyspepsia, Heartburn, Reflux, atypical Chest Pain, LPR. All these describe what happens when what is in the stomach enters the esophagus when it isn't supposed to.
The esophagus is a tube of muscle that works in coordination to move food and water from the mouth to the stomach. At the bottom of the esophagus is a complicated array of muscles that work together in a coordinated fashion to create a valve that prevents food and fluid from leaving the stomach and entering the esophagus. This valve is called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). The disfunction of the LES is a major contributor to reflux as it cannot stop the acidic fluid from the stomach from entering the esophagus during normal activities such as laughing, exertion and sleeping. |
